Canadian Geological Discoveries: Tectonic Plate Boundaries

August 30, 2022

Today on Addison's Blog we have received new information about the interesting groundbreaking facts about Canada's geological structure; tectonic plates. Now those of you who are curious about what those are, the answer can be explained through science. According to National Geographic, Tectonic Plates are a theory of how the earth's crusts and landforms were created during the beginning of time. However, in the ancient 1960s, these movements were furtherly developed when natural disasters such as volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountain building.

Now there are a total of 7 tectonic plates which surround the 7 continents of the world which are, North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania (Into-Australia), and Antarctica. There are also some minor plates that are made when the bigger plates intercept. A prime example is the Philippines, between the Eurasian plate, the Pacific plate, and the Indo-Australian plate. Since Canada is located in the western part of the Northern Hemisphere, it is found in the North American Tectonic Plate.

The North American Plate can be reached up towards the North Pole, as well as Greenland, the Bahamas, Cuba, Siberia, and even a small island of Japan.

Fun Fact to know: Did you know that another plate known as the Farallon plate was responsible for pulling apart North America from Africa?

This video here from youtube will show you exactly how the plates were formed 4 billion years ago when the land was once a huge mass of rock surrounding a body of water.

  1. Nice tectonic setting! It seems your country has plate tectonic boundaries close by on its west side, so you should expect lots of geological activity there!
