Canadian Geological Discoveries: Mass Wasting
October 16, 2022
This week's topic for Canada's geological findings is mass wasting. Mass wasting is when rocks and soil become too unstable and slope down the sides of large hills or cliffs. Some examples of this are debris flows, rock falls, and slumps. Most mass wasting in the country can be found in mostly all the regions of Canada, but most of these can be found in British Columbia, Ontario, and the St. Lawrence Lowlands of Quebec. Another name for these is called Landslides.
The reason why landslides happen is perhaps due to the triggering of multiple hazards. Some of these hazards include heavy rainfalls, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and even coastal erosion. The image below here will show you the different types of landslides that are caused by different hazards.
Some of these landslides' speeds can be somewhat slow to extremely quick. That is one of the first things you need to know in order to avoid this type of disaster. The speed of the slope is unpredictable so it's best that you run or move away from the hazard soon as fast as possible. Another thing to know is to locate them. Basically, the best thing to do when successfully finding a landslide hill is to put up hazard marks to mark the territory.
There are also ways to prevent these mass wastings engineer call. Most of this can be resolved if there were improved drainage, cleaning the top of the slope, or building a dam around the area of the slope to prevent a mass avalanche. Other options would be to build chutes on the runway to divert the flow of the mass waste from destroying anything in its path.

Great graphic Addison. I'm sorry to hear mass wasting is all over Canada, yikes.
